“I STRUGGLED EVERY DAY WITH MY WEIGHT. I KNEW I HAD TO TURN THINGS AROUND” – ROBB’S STORY

Over 10,000 people will take on their first half marathon at the Manchester Half 2025, including local man Robb Mallinson who never dreamed he’d be able to run 13.1 miles due to struggles with his weight.

At his heaviest, Robb weighed 22 stone and suffered from anxiety and depression.

Robb is taking on the challenge this October to celebrate his incredible transformation, having shed over 10 stone in 18 months!

Robb told us about his journey to a healthier weight and how running changed his outlook. Read his inspiring story below.

Hi, I’m Robb and I currently live in Stockport. As a child I used to be really active and played a lot of cricket and rugby at school. However, like many people in their twenties, I discovered pubs, beer, and late-night takeaways. Over time, those habits – combined with a lack of exercise – led to significant weight gain. At my heaviest, I weighed 22 stone – an unhealthy weight for anyone, especially a man with a 5”6 frame.

Robb had a dangerously high resting heart rate and struggled daily.

At this time, my mental health was at rock bottom. I struggled every day with anxiety and depression and constantly felt judged for my size.

In January 2024, I decided it was time to make a serious change. My resting heart rate was dangerously high, and I struggled with simple tasks like walking up stairs. Along with dietary changes, I hired a personal trainer to help me take the first, intimidating steps into the gym. I began to make progress, and one day I stepped on the treadmill to discover that I could run. Gradually, I built up to a 5k – a huge confidence boost and the moment I began to realise I was more capable than I’d ever believed.

Robb took on his first 10k in May – and will step up to 13.1 miles at the Manchester Half in October.

Now, over a year later, I weigh between 12 and 13 stone and have dropped four clothes size. I’ve started looking for new ways to push myself—both mentally and physically. Earlier this year, I took part in a charity white collar boxing bout, which was a huge personal milestone.

I’ve also caught the running bug. About six months ago, I began running regularly and built up enough confidence to enter my first official race – a 10K in May. I completed it in 56 minutes without stopping, which was a massive achievement for me.

My transformation has been incredible. I now run 4–5 times a week, and my breathing, stamina, and heart health have drastically improved. My whole outlook on life has changed, as I’ve realised the power of setting new goals and pushing myself.

Robb trained intensely for a white collar boxing event, which gave him a huge confidence boost.

I’m currently training for my first half marathon at the Manchester Half in October. While I’m slightly nervous (my longest run so far is 12K), I’m excited for the challenge ahead.

If you’re thinking about starting your own weight loss or fitness journey, my advice is to go at your own pace. My approach to dieting was quite extreme, and looking back, I could have used more variety. One thing I strongly recommend is working with a personal trainer, especially in the beginning – it can really boost your confidence and make the gym feel a lot less intimidating.

Thank you, Robb, for sharing your story, and we can’t wait to see you achieve something extraordinary with us in October!
