For the Fastest Four Man Costume record attempt, visit our article here.

While completing 13.1 miles is challenge enough for most people, Manchester Half participant Sophie Godley will take on the challenge carrying an extra 8kg of weight – in the form of golf clubs.

Why would someone put themselves through such a gruelling physical challenge, risking backache and some serious blisters? The Guinness World Record challenger explained all ahead of the event on 12th October. Discover Sophie’s amazing story below!

Sophie will be carrying 13 golf clubs over the 13.1 mile course.

Hi Sophie – introduce yourself.

My name is Sophie Godley and I’m from Worksop. I’m a competitive golfer and current member of Worksop Golf club with a handicap of +2. I’ve never been a runner, but this year I’m taking on the Manchester Half to break a Guinness World Record!

Which Guinness World Record are you trying to break at the event?

I’m going for the Fastest Half Marathon Carrying Golf Clubs (Female). This means I’ll be carrying 13 golf clubs and aiming for a time of sub 2 hours 30 minutes.

Sophie is a competitive member of Worksop Golf club.

What made you decide to take on this challenge?

Aside from Manchester being my favourite city, I am taking on the challenge to raise a minimum of £1,000 for bowel cancer. Jake, my cousin, is my biggest inspiration for me doing this as he was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Gardner’s Syndrome (FAP).

How is training going?

It’s been challenging! Some runs being easier than others. I’ve trained with a weighted vest to simulate the heaviness of the golf bag, however I’m going to start going on runs with all the equipment in preparation for the race.
