Nick Owen Shoots for Guinness World Record attempt at the Manchester Half Marathon
This year, Manchester Half Marathon participant Nick Owen is shooting his shot this year to get his name in the celebrated Guinness World Records. The 49-year-old will be suiting up in formal attire to chase down the record for the fastest man dressed as a billiard player – the current record being 1 hour and 42 minutes.
“I like to put a twist on things” Nick answered, when asked why he chose the challenge. “I always enjoy the Manchester Half I have pedalled from where I live in Clitheroe to the start line twice now. For context, that’s 36.6 miles – a ride that takes about 2 hours to do!”
So, what exactly will Nick be wearing on Sunday 15th October, and most importantly, will he be running with the defining snooker cue?
“I’ll be wearing a long-sleeved white shirt, waistcoat, long trousers and yes, I will be running with a full-sized snooker cue! I think I’ll have to shift it from hand to hand during the event, to even out the weight a bit. And of course, I’ll try not to take anyone out with it en route!”
“I’m actually hopeless at snooker” he added. “It’s quite a slow sport isn’t it. I like a bit of speed”.
Well, if all goes to plan, that’s exactly what we should see from Nick at the event…
“I can usually do a half marathon in 1 hour 35 but reckon it will be a 1 hour 40 this time, owing to the weight of the outfit. I’ll have to practice though – probably closer to event day so that I don’t get in my own head about something that is particularly challenging. I don’t do well in the heat though, so I might have to go out to train at night… although that might also be because I’ll be a bit self-conscious in the outfit!”
On the event day, Nick will run with his work colleague Nathan Ball, who will capture photos and video ‘evidence’ of Nick to be submitted to the Guinness World Records. Make sure to give the pair a shout out if you see them, and good luck Nick in this remarkable challenge!
