How to Keep Your Training on Track This Summer
The training you put in this summer is what shows up on Manchester’s half start line. It sounds simple, but training in the heat can be tough so we’ve teamed up with the #1 running coaching app, Runna, to give you some tips.
Runna’s personalised plans are built to work with you through the summer heat, so your Manchester training doesn’t go on an extended holiday (even if you might be dreaming of one).

Here’s how to make summer training count:
1. 🌡️ Let your pace flex with the temperature
On hot days, a more relaxed pace can deliver the same training benefit as your usual splits on a cooler one. Your effort is what matters, not fixating on the numbers.
💡 Coming soon! Runna’s brand new Adapt for Heat feature recommends adjusted pace targets based on the day’s forecast, so every session still hits the mark, without you having to work it out yourself.
2. 🚶 A longer walking break counts too
Hot days ask more of your body between efforts. Taking a little longer to recover, or slowing for a walk break on your easy run, gets you the same training benefit with less strain.
💡 Think of it as working with the heat, not against it.
3. 🧃 Hydrate ahead of the heat, not during it
By the time you feel thirsty after a hot run, you’re already behind. Topping up water and electrolytes through the day, not just before you head out, keeps you energised.
💡Runna’s guide to electrolytes breaks down exactly what to add to your routine on hot training days.
4. 🌴 Holiday mode
Switch off, and still stay on track. If you’re planning some well-deserved time away, Runna helps you dial things down while you’re away, so your training keeps ticking without taking over.
Train with the season, not against it, and summer becomes one of the best training windows of the year.
